Real-Time WBGT Heat Safety for the U.S. Virgin Islands

The heat index stops at humidity. WBGT sees the sun, the wind, and the sky, the number safety officials actually use to decide who works, practices, and plays outside.

Why WBGT Matters

On a Caribbean afternoon, the difference between shade and sun is the difference between “warm” and “medical emergency.”

Wet Bulb Globe Temperature was built for exactly this environment. It began as a U.S. military standard after heat casualties in training, and it is now the metric behind OSHA heat guidance andNFHS athletic policy because it measures what a body actually experiences: evaporation fighting humidity, breeze carrying heat away, and the radiant load of direct tropical sun.

The USVI sits at 18°N. In July the sun passes nearly overhead, andfull sun can add the equivalent of up to 15°F to how heat stresses your body compared to shade, load the heat index simply cannot see.

The trade winds are your ally. A steady 20 mph easterly can hold WBGT a full threat tier lower than a calm day at identical temperature and humidity. When the wind dies, respect the map.

Solar radiation

Direct + diffuse sun and its angle in the sky. Invisible to the heat index.

Wind

Moving air strips heat from skin and the instrument alike. Also invisible to the heat index.

Humidity

Governs whether sweat can evaporate at all, the body’s only real cooling system.

Air temperature

The familiar number, necessary, but on its own it badly under-warns in the tropics.

WBGT vs. Heat Index

The short answer: the heat index estimates how hot it feels in theshade from temperature and humidity alone. WBGT measures total outdoor heat stress, adding direct sun, wind, and cloud cover, which is why safety organizations use WBGT to regulate work and sport.

Heat Safety by Audience

The same WBGT reading demands different decisions from a foreman, a coach, and a visitor on their second day of vacation. Pin any location on the map for guidance tuned to age, activity, and surface.

Outdoor workers

Construction, marine, agriculture. OSHA recommends WBGT-based work/rest cycles; radiant load on job sites makes shade-only metrics under-read.

Caution ≥ 84.7°F

Coaches & athletics

NFHS calls WBGT the gold standard for practice modification. Schedule conditioning by the forecast band, not the air temperature.

Modify ≥ 87.8°F

Schools

Recess, PE, and field-day decisions need one defensible number. WBGT bands translate directly into activity policy.

Shade ≥ 84.7°F

Tourists & hikers

Reef Bay Trail at 2pm is a different planet from the beach at 9am. Unacclimatized visitors should treat every band one level more seriously.

Plan ≥ 80.0°F

Event organizers

Carnival, races, festivals: go/no-go timing, water stations, shade, and medical staffing all key off the WBGT forecast.

Prepare ≥ 80.0°F

Caregivers & health

Infants, elders, and people on certain medications overheat far sooner. Use the personal risk profile in the map’s analysis panel.

Questions, answered plainly

What is Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT)?
WBGT is a heat-stress index that combines air temperature, humidity, wind speed, and solar radiation into one number describing how hard heat actually hits a body outdoors. It is the standard used by the U.S. military, OSHA guidance, and high-school athletics associations to decide when outdoor activity becomes unsafe.
How is WBGT different from the heat index?
The heat index only combines temperature and humidity, and it assumes you are standing in the shade. WBGT additionally accounts for direct sun, wind, and cloud cover. In full sun, conditions can be dangerous even when the heat index looks moderate, which is exactly the situation on most USVI afternoons.
What WBGT is unsafe for outdoor work or sports?
Risk rises in bands: below 80°F WBGT is low threat; 80 to 84.6°F elevated; 84.7 to 87.7°F moderate, add rest breaks and shade; 87.8 to 89.7°F high, strenuous activity should be curtailed; and at 89.8°F+ many athletic associations cancel outdoor practice entirely. Acclimatization, workload, and personal risk factors shift these bands for individuals.
How often does ClimaSafe update?
Weather inputs refresh roughly every 15 minutes from the Open-Meteo model, and the map recomputes WBGT from the newest data each time you load or refresh the page. Every reading is timestamped in Atlantic Standard Time so you can see exactly how fresh it is.
How is ClimaSafe’s WBGT calculated?
ClimaSafe solves the Liljegren et al. (2008) energy-balance model, the same physically-based method used by leading meteorological institutions, computing the natural wet-bulb and globe temperatures from temperature, humidity, wind, pressure, and solar radiation. Our implementation is validated bit-for-bit against ECMWF’s reference library across 840 test conditions.
Does ClimaSafe replace official weather advisories?
No. ClimaSafe is a free educational tool for planning outdoor activity. Always follow official National Weather Service advisories and guidance from VITEMA and the VI Department of Health during heat events and emergencies.
